In modern e-commerce advertising, the word "genuine leather" is frequently used as a hallmark of luxury. However, in tanning terminology, "genuine leather" simply means the product technically contains leather fibers — often leftover bottom split layers bonded with resin glue and embossed with a fake grain stamp.
The Hierarchy of Leather Grades
- Full-Grain Leather (The Crown Jewel): The outermost layer of the hide with all natural grain intact. It retains the highest tensile strength and develops a rich, lustrous patina as it ages. Every Sai Bag Industry briefcase is crafted exclusively from certified full-grain hides.
- Top-Grain Leather: The surface has been lightly sanded to buff out scars and finished with a topcoat. It is softer but lacks the lifetime durability of full-grain.
- Genuine / Bonded Leather: Shredded leather scraps pulverized and glued together with polyurethane. It tends to peel within 12-18 months.
